Bifocal Lens FAQs

Bifocal, trifocal, and multifocal eyeglasses have long been used to treat refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Recent changes in the materials used and the effectiveness of bifocal contacts have led to increased popularity. If you live in or near Chico, CA, and are seeking an optometrist near you for bifocal glasses or contacts, consider the Family Eye Care team.

How Do Bifocal Contact Lenses Work?

Bifocals combine two or more corrective strengths on a single lens and are available for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Bifocals contacts come in three designs:

•           Concentric lenses have concentric circles, like a dart board. Near and far vision zones alternate with each circle.

•           Aspheric lenses are like progressive lenses. The corrective strength at the center gradually transitions to another strength on the perimeter.

•           Segmented bifocal lenses have one strength at the bottom and another at the top of the lens.

Who Uses Bifocals?

Multifocal lenses are often used by those over 40 with presbyopia or age-related farsightedness. Usually, the wearer is nearsighted and then becomes farsighted, so bifocals work to correct both issues.

Will I Need to Learn How to Use Bifocals?

Most people experience a learning period as their eyes and brain adjust to their new lenses. Regardless of the lens design, however, most people adjust quickly without problems.

Do Some Lens Designs Work Better Than Others?

Yes. Aspheric or progressive lenses are often most effective when treating mild presbyopia cases, while concentric and segmented designs are used for advanced farsightedness. While aspheric and concentric lenses can float around the eyes, segmented lenses must stay in the same location above the eye, with one prescription always on top and the other on the bottom. They typically use the rigid gas permeable (RGP) format.

Which Lens Type Will Work Best for Me?

There is no generic answer to this question. Our eye doctor will recommend specific contacts based on your prescription, your eyes' shape and physical features, and your lifestyle. For many patients, our eye doctor will try multiple types during fitting or at-home trials. The choice is often based on which type your eyes tolerate best.
